A group of entrepreneurs crosses two generations with a simple passionate goal in mind – to transform traditional, rigid, expensive enterprise software into a new paradigm, convert “standard-best-practice-implementation” often over-charged by not-qualified consultants into a new generation that can fit exactly what you want, pay as you need and enable “Do-It-Yourself” high CP value software. For years, we have seen many enterprises using the traditional enterprise system successfully when focusing on standard operations, but we also have observed many enterprises suffering to adjust standard software, rely on custom development to fill the missing gaps. As a result, companies are asked to pay high cost in development, difficult to maintain the system, and the worst – still fail to gain business values. We have no doubt for the value of enterprise systems for standardised operation process, but we also are aware of the missing linkage between automated transaction processes and the demands of complex decision making, precision planning, complex forecasting and projections, which are still not centrally managed and surprisingly, are still done in Excel. Therefore, we dare to challenge ourselves and ask a simple question – how can we use create a planning, simulation and future projection system as simple as Excel?
After numerous barnstorms and analysis, we dig into the essence of the enterprise challenge and depicted below. The four evolution stages explains why the important planning and simulation tasks remains in Excel . For the first and second stages, both transaction and planning are done in consistent media, paper and Excel. When ERP system starts, we stepped into the 3rd phase where the traditional enterprise system have complex data modelling and transaction processed in system, yet, the data models are disconnected from most complex planning and experienced based tasks. The enterprise data models increases the complexity rapidly to fit the constantly increasing enterprise operation in past few decades, those complex models are suitable for daily operation but cannot provide the flexibility needed for planning and simulation. Consequently, those original Excel-based planners can no longer communicate with the constantly growing enterprise data model anymore. The easiness of integrated data models for process and planing in 2nd stage no longer exists, so the transaction system and the planning Excels depart farther and farther. Ironically, when the enterprise system becomes more sophisticated and detail oriented, more complex and flexible estimation, simulation, planning, and projections cannot match any more, therefore, kept in individual decision maker’s laptop and Excels. We realise that we must bring back the convenience of the second stage when all data models can be easily controlled by the decision maker while maintaining the sophisticated operation system, but match the planning needs while preserving the simple usage as Excel – that is the birth of CP4’s foundation.
This group of stubborn designers and engineers started to implement the CP4 idea since 2013. With endless debates, arguments, brainstorms and criticisms, we have learned from different implementations to break and re-design our product again and again until reach today’s design concepts, implementation methodology, and product capabilities. Our goal is not to replace ERP/CRM/SCM/HCM/PLM/SEM/EDW, but to complement the missing portion by seamlessly bringing all those enterprise data model/ computation capabilities to the fingertips of an enterprise decision maker, and make it as close as exactly what they need. The decision maker should be able to manipulate any enterprise data model including their own empirical formulas/rules, and experienced based data models / business judgments as easy as what they did in their own Excels to conduct precision planning and future simulation / projections.
CP4’s concept is simple, but the design can derive to endless combinations and possibilities. We believe in minimal codes for maximal business value. Hanse, CP4 is actually delivering the capability to normalise any custom development. When a data model from an arbitrary data source are normalised into a Cube, decision maker can use it as an Excel’s cell except the data and computation are from different enterprise systems or empirical Excels. Differing from traditional enterprise system, CP4 is not process-oriented, but data oriented. When data are normalised into Cube. CP4 should be used to manage the works that are too costly and too difficult to manage in traditional enterprise system. CP4 is a envision platform, so the main components are the building blocks and not a pre-defined process – that means, how the blocks are assembled to work is up to decision maker’s creativity.
CP4 will never be used for transaction processes which is suitable for traditional enterprise systems Therefore, CP4 is used for tasks which require flexible data models, constant changing empirical function, experienced based judgments, context varied decision making, time-competition based simulation, and cross-organisation collaborations. CP4 is preparing enterprise software to fulfil the emends of Industrial 4.0’s demands in managing uncertainty, flexibility, agility, dynamic complexity and envision to design future.
